User privileges are based on the nature of the assignment (such as Stake President, Bishop, Ward Clerk, Church Employee, etc.). In most cases, users have only search and view capabilities. Adding and editing rights are limited to users in specific positions, such as managers and employees at Church Headquarters and Area Administration Offices.

To have access, users must be listed in the correct standard position in CDOL and have an LDS Account. People with these [[callings]] will be listed in CDOL if they have been added using the appropriate [[Leader and Unit Change Request]] form or are properly listed in MLS using the standardized callings.

Someone without access to CDOL can look up the leader of a congregation using [[LDS Maps]]. Enter a member's address and the congregation responsible for that location is displayed. Click on that congregation's link to view the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

== Data interchange between CDOL and MLS ==
Depending on the position being updated, data may flow in either direction between CDOL and MLS. CDOL also negotiates the exchange of data between stakes and wards when changes made using the stake's MLS affect child units or when changes made using the ward's MLS affect the parent unit.

Some members (such as assistant ward clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding payments for a missionary whose family changed wards). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, under current policy it is only permitted for those listed above.

*Resolved Firefox 3.5 issue with the Classification functionality being cutoff on the Organization Edit|General tab.

=====Organization Summary Page Style=====
*Changed Expand/Collapse All to not just toggle all. If some sections are expanded then the rest will expand.
*Clicking on links no longer triggers an expand/collapse on that section while waiting to load the new page.
*Changed the expand/collapse trigger area for the positions section to be just icon/assignment type/primary contact. Previously, it was triggering if you clicked on any of the contact information.

=====CDOL <-> MLS Processing=====
*MLS files are now generated automatically for brand new units activated via the Boundary and Leadership Change process in CDOL.

The online '''Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders (CDOL)''' provides authorized priesthood leaders and clerks with information on Church units and other organizations within the Church, including contact information for their leaders.

== Capabilities ==
CDOL allows leaders to:
* Look up leaders of other units, including contact information
* See the organizational structure of units. For example, a stake would have links to the wards and branches within the stake and any family history centers in the stake, as well as larger entities that include the stake, such as areas, welfare regions, temple districts, etc.
* Access a Unit Locator to find what ward and stake contains a given street address
* View current unit boundary maps. (Currently for Stake and District positions)
* Find how to contact any Church department
* Create a customized directory
* Perform searches for organizations or leaders using multiple search criteria
* Save searches
* See the current local time for units
* See all [[Callings#Difference between standard positions and custom positions|Standard Positions]] for units in the user's ward and stake

== Accessing CDOL ==
This online CDOL uses [[LDS Account]] credentials and is located at https://cdol.lds.org. If you do not have an LDS Account, you will need to [[LDS_Account#Create_an_account|create]] one the first time you visit the website. This can be done by clicking the link "Register for an LDS Account."

The following positions have been approved for access:

Effective 5 November 2009, access to CDOL has been expanded to include the following standard positions:

* Branch Clerk
* Branch Executive Secretary

To have access, users must be listed in the correct standard position in CDOL and have an LDS Account. People with these [[callings]] will be listed in CDOL if they have been added using the appropriate [[Leader and Unit Change Request]] form or are properly listed in MLS using the standardized callings.

The above positions have the following rights:
* View all public non sensitive data.
* Edit contact information for their positions.
* View all Church standard positions for their units.
* Stake/District positions can view all standard positions on their child units.
* Ward/Branch positions can view all standard positions for their Stake/District.
* View current unit boundary maps.

==== Family History Center directors ====
FHC directors can access CDOL, but can only view the following organizations: Family History Center, Family History Service Center, Family History Training Center, and Family History Center - Public Library.

=== Alternative for those without access ===
Some members (such as assistant ward clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding payments for a missionary whose family changed wards). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, under current policy it is only permitted for those listed above.

One way to look up a bishop is to use the [[Meetinghouse Locator]]. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

The CDOL has been published in a variety of formats:
* Originally, the CDOL was published in book form.
* Later it was published on CDs that were sent to local units. The last update on CD was distributed in March 2007.
* The first online version of CDOL was created at http://col.ldschurch.org. This website used NetID login credentials. *If a user had saved an Advanced Search that uses the "Active as of" date field, the user needs to edit the search and re-save it in order to resolve a problem that caused the search to query correctly only the first time it was run.

Some members (such as assistant ward clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding payments for a missionary whose family changed wards). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, under current policy it is only permitted for those listed above.

One way to look up a bishop is to use the [[Meetinghouse Locator]]. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. == Capabilities ==
CDOL allows leaders to:

* See the organizational structure of units. For example, a stake would have links to the wards and branches within the stake and any family history centers in the stake, as well as larger entities that include the stake, such as areas, welfare regions, temple districts, etc.
* Access a Unit Locator to find what ward and stake contains a given street address
* Find how to contact any Church department

== Online CDOL (cdol.lds.org) ==
The current version of CDOL was announced in a letter dated 18 December 2008. This new version uses [[LDS Account]] credentials and is located at https://cdol.lds.org. If you do not have an LDS Account, you will need to [[LDS_Account#Create_an_account|create]] one the first time you visit the website. This can be done by clicking the link "Register for an LDS Account."

The new version adds the following features:

To have access, users must be listed in the correct standard position in CDOL and have an LDS Account. The above positions have the following rights.
* View all public non sensitive data.
* Edit contact information for their positions.
* View all Church standard positions for their units.
* Stake/District positions can view all standard positions on their child units.
* Ward/Branch positions can view all standard positions for their Stake/District.
* View current unit boundary maps. (coming in 2.3.2)

=== Alternative for those without access ===
Some members (such as assistant ward clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding payments for a missionary whose family changed wards). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, under current policy it is only permitted for those listed above.

One way to look up a bishop is to use the [[Meetinghouse Locator]]. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

=== Alternative for those without access ===
Some members (such as assistant ward clerks) might need to look up bishops of other wards (e.g., to communicate regarding payments for a missionary whose family changed wards). Although access to CDOL would be helpful, under current policy it is only permitted for those listed above.

One way to look up a bishop is to use the [[Meetinghouse Locator]]. Entering a member's new address will display the assigned congregation. Clicking on that congregation's link will display a popup over the map that includes the bishop's last name and a phone number.

For moving membership records, it is helpful to have the ward and stake unit numbers and names for the member's new address<ref>{{LDSTech|title=Alternative for getting unit numbers without access to CDOL|post=18744}}</ref>. The popup from maps.lds.org described above will have a link labeled "Go to Website" (assuming the new stake participates in the [[Local Unit Website]] program, which most do). Following that link will take you to the ward's home page. If you look closely at the URL for that page, it will end in "-nnnnnn,00.html"; the "nnnnnn" is the unit number for the ward. Similarly, if you then follow the "Stake Home" link from the ward's home page, you will be taken to the stake's home page, where you can examine the URL to obtain the stake's unit number.

====Organization Summary Page Style====
Organization summary pages were modified to use expand/collapse sections in order to improve application performance by reducing the amount of data initially loaded.
====Member Localized Name Functionality====
CDOL will now add the localized names of a member if the names exist in the Church Membership Information System (CMIS). Additional improvements to name usage will be made in a future CDOL release.
====LUCR Unit Change Information Support====
With the preceding CDOL release, stake and district leaders were able to submit changes to local unit leaders electronically using the Local Unit Change Request (LUCR) functionality. This process replaced the previous paper-only Information Change Request process. However, absent was the "Unit Information Change" portion of the process which allowed leaders to make changes to the property address, spoken and material languages, currency, and building telephone numbers. With this release this functionality is now supported by CDOL. ''Additional changes will be made to MLS to add the corresponding functionality into the LUCR process.''
====Metadata Synchronization Support====
With this release CDOL now supports the exchange of position and organization metadata information with MLS. This means that if a new position is added in CDOL for local units the information about the position can be synchronized with MLS. ====Meeting Times Process Change====
Previously, the meeting time files sent from MLS units were a separate file from the MLS position data file. ==Resolved Issues==
The following have been resolved with this release:
*Export file no longer contains standard positions submitted from MLS units unless user has rights to view those positions.
*Localized address fields now meet CDOL business rules for completeness by requiring both the country and street 1 addresses to be populated.
*Search created by a user and then exported to file omits phone numbers listed in CDOL.
*Search results export to file gives wrong data for non-active organizations.
*Drop-down boxes in the Firefox Web browser do not expand to show all items.
*Misleading error message appears when user deletes an assignment.
*Once historical notes PDF attachments are published users cannot download the PDF.
*Administrators cannot change the display order for new position types before they are saved.
*Remove duplicate email addresses from search result email list.
*Events in Proposals|Organizations tab that have text fields don't show cursor until they are saved.
*Database error occurs whenever a unit is included in a proposal which has an organization note existing for it already.
*Show grouped organizations on the local unit Positions Detail Summary page.
*MLS position refreshes initiated from CDOL now function correctly.
*CDOL works correctly after the CMIS 4.8 upgrade.
*Resolved issue where fixing addresses from Verification did not send the user back to Verification but caused the application to freeze.
*Saved searches no longer disappear.
*Fixed the map viewer role so assigned users and positions can see the local unit map link.
*Resolved some issues preventing parts of CDOL from displaying/working correctly in Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.5.
*Fixed problem which caused Advanced Searches using the "Active as of" date field to only query correctly the first time. However, old searches using this criteria will need to be edited and re-saved in order to fix the problem.
*When implementing a proposal with many events the "loading" notification modal now scrolls with the page.
*In Internet Explorer 7, clicking on a Saved Search now returns the search results.

==Unresolved Issues==
The following known issues may affect some CDOL users:
*This release is incompatible with the Chrome or Safari4 browsers.
*Cannot add scope to LOCATION role types when assigning these types of roles to users.
*The Copy From routine has been changed to fix a problem. However, the user interface is confusing. An improved user interface will be released in the CDOL 2.3.2.1 patch.
*If a user had saved an Advanced Search that uses the "Active as of" date field, the user will need to edit the search and re-save it in order to complete resolve a problem which caused the search to only query correctly the first time it was ran.
*Expand All/Collapse All functionality on the organization summary page only performs the opposite action of the current expand/collapse state. This means that any section that is currently expand will be collapsed and any section that is currently collapsed will be expanded.
*In Firefox 3.5, the Classification functionality is cutoff on the Organization Edit|General tab. It is still usable.
*Discontinue a unit with a future effective date puts the unit in a partial published state and never updates the status or sends the unit to verification.
*Proposal document is lost if the following steps occur:
**#Create a proposal and give it a document.
**#On the proposal dashboard select that proposal and at least one other proposal to create a new agenda (the other proposal must not have a document).
**#Create the agenda.
**#Enter and edit the proposal.
**If there is at least one other proposal with a document on it in the proposals you used to create the new agenda your document will not be lost.
*Proposal Mission template does not add new unit number in footer.
*Sometimes the published version of a record is missing.
*Discrepancy between the release date appearing in Verification for a leader sent from MLS as opposed to the assignment record for the leader.
*Some leaders are randomly set to sensitive status.
*Units that are in a country which has the CDOL attribute Sensitive set to true for the country do not inherit the sensitivity.
*Users viewing the Public Searches are able to edit them and save their changes to the Public Search they are viewing making it so others will see their search the next time it is ran.
*CDOL letters have a problem processing through email.
*Certificates and Letters do not clear out off the "to be printed" list once they have been processed.
*Share search link on search results throws error.
*Cannot edit Proposal Note, always get kicked out to the HTML home page.
*The Materials Languages pick list in Advanced Search under Organization Language does not display all the language choices that are in the database for units with populated material language.
*Implementations from Proposals do not update legacy names.
*The order of the address types listed on the Organization and Leader Summary pages is not standardized.

====Persisting Unresolved Issues====
*In Internet Explorer, Advanced Search selections are not placed to the right of the box.
*In Internet Explorer 7, trying to save or load a page often gets stuck.

== Who can see callings? ==

In the 12:37pm 29 July 2009 revision, [[User:Calebpusey|Calebpusey]] added the line to the features list:

That doesn't match my experience, so I'm wondering why it was added. When I go into the CDOL, I can't see any Standard Positions for any ward in my stake or for the stake itself, with just a few exceptions: I can see the bishop of each ward, and at the stake level I can see the stake presidency, stake executive secretary, stake patriarch, and stake clerk and assistant clerks. But I can see that same level of information for every stake in the Church. There is no difference between what I can see for my ward or for any other ward in the Church -- just the bishop is listed.

Before the old CDOL site was taken down, I visited it and noticed that it had a lot of people listed in my ward; perhaps everyone with a Standard Position. I did not look at other units in my stake or the Church. But that is rather a moot point, since it doesn't really matter how the old site worked. What we need to document is how the current CDOL site works, and for me it doesn't show the Standard Positions.

However, I know that the CDOL shows people different data, depending on their permission level, which depends in part on their calling. Am I seeing what I see because I am an assistant stake clerk? :Speaking as a stake clerk, when I access CDOL I can now see all stake officers by selecting the ''Show All Positions'' link which is displayed alongside the ''POSITIONS'' heading. Likewise for each unit in the stake, the same link will display all ward officers assigned to standard positions. In each case when the link is selected if first returns a list of collapsed groups with an arrow button pointing to the right. Selecting the button expands the groups and changes the button so that it points down. == Historical CDOL versions ==
The CDOL has been published in a variety of formats:
* Originally, the CDOL was published in book form.
* Later it was published on CDs that were sent to local units. The last update on CD was distributed in March 2007.
* The first online version of CDOL was created at http://col.ldschurch.org. This website used NetID login credentials. As of 31 December 2008 this site ceased being promoted; in August 2009 it was discontinued and now simply directs users to register for an [[LDS Account]] and then use the new site at http://cdol.lds.org.
