Changing a preferred name
Is there a way to change the preferred last name of a ward member who would prefer the last name of their children?

Yes in LCR under the individuals member profile, there is the option to change the Preferred Name.

I'm not sure if Preferred Name includes the Last/Family name.
What frequently trips people up is the "Household Name". That determines what name is used to place the household in the directory.

Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.
