"Birth Name" in member record

We have a child in our ward. The mother recently got a court order to change the child's name. Easy enough to do in LCR. Do I need to put the child's previous name into the "Birth Name" section or is that section optional, or made for a different purpose? The family would prefer to not have the previous name in the records. I am trying to determine if that is their preference, or if they are firmly opposed. But I guess I am wondering is the "Birth Name" required? Is it really only used for maiden names, or does the Church want to keep a record of things like the child I am working with. I have seen the court order, so I have no doubts that his current legal name has been changed.

Thought I would post the resolution, in case anyone else runs into this or has questions about the Birth Name field. It appears to be completely optional. I called the support line, and he said that it is mostly used in the case of maiden names, or if someone changes their name, but not a legal change. But even then, it is not a required field - the system will let you update the legal name without filling in the Birth Name field.
